Customer Reviews for Carmello Construction

“While this is not the review I was hoping to write because we truly liked Barry, but it is easy to like people when everything is going right! Mr Carmello, was responsive, polite, and very professional during our initial meeting/estimate. Hiring him was an easy decision from this interaction, his estimate price, and add on top of that an A+ rating on this site, but in the end, a highly dissatisfied customer.
After noticing the issue at hand, we gave Mr Carmello the opportunity to correct it, which he replied that there was nothing that he could do. The work we had done was at our newly constructed home and I am truly at a loss on how the level of work can be construed as A+. I do not mean to be insulting but this is our third home and we have had "good cement work" before but are new to the area and relied heavy on this site for recommendations.
The main issue is on the pad, there is a large crack running horizontally completely across the entire surface, and as deep as can be seen until disappearing below the dirt. Off of the main crack there are now secondary cracks beginning to spread laterally as well as chipping on the inner edges of the crack. This pad has not one level surface, and is extremely wavy upon closer inspection. Another crack has formed and is at the top step of the bottom set of steps, and appears the surfaces are separating. As if this is not enough, there is a low spot in the corner of the pad closest to the steps and house where water is pooling, and deteriorating the cement. As I stated, this house was brand new, our stoop is faced with the same brick that is on our foundation, now there is a crack in the mortar from the “new cement work” all the way to the opposing side of the stoop, clearly caused by bad workmanship.
Now to the finish… All three surfaces were done in different finishes, with the only desired surface being on the surface that has a giant crack in it. Bottom steps had picture framing done which was not carried onto the pad or top steps, and the very bottom step was missed. The top steps are very course, and it appears that no finishing was done here. The face of the steps that goes to the stoop from the pad had a smooth finish done, but this was done after the cement was dry, appearing to be a skim coat and is now cracking and chipping off of the actual surface. Also, numerous steps have flaking, and chipping occurring on the faces or corners. In addition, cement was splashed on the house, driveway, and throughout the yard.
The initial cracks were noticed within a month of completion. Yet again we are told there is nothing that can be done. We have not even hit winter yet and I am experiencing these problems. Not only will I have to have this replaced doubling my costs, I now also have to have the mortar repaired. Every day I look, the work deteriorates, and I find more problems. I have had two companies here to look at the work, and let’s just say, they are baffled by the poor workmanship.
